WALKING DOWNTOWN BOLOGNA

Tuesday Sept. 7, 2010

A three-hours tour on foot to discover the City.

Piazza Maggiore. Any first approach with the town starts from the Main Square, heart of the most significant events of Bologna over the centuries. Visit to the Public Palaces that still preserve their medieval charm: Palazzo del Podestà and Palazzo d’Accursio.

Basilica di San Petronio. Best loved church of Bologna’s inhabitants, with its unfinished facade where we can admire the Virgin with Child by Jacopo della Quercia. Inside, important artworks by Giovanni da Modena, Lorenzo Costa, Francesco Francia, Parmigianino, and the 17th century meridian line: one of the most famous in the world.

Fontana del Nettuno. Masterpiece by Giambologna and Tommaso Laureti, the fountain, created during the period of the Pope Pio IV, is the symbol of the Pope power in Bologna.

Archiginnasio. The Archiginnasio Palace is the first seat of the prestigious University. Inside we can find the unique Anatomy Room, where in old times medicine teachers used to give anatomy lectures, showing the dissection of cadavers (closed on Saturday afternoons and on Sundays).

Medieval Market and Mercanzia Palace. Across the old narrow roads of the quaint medieval market behind the square, we reach the Foro dei Mercanti, old customs office and seat of traders’ corporation since the 14th century and finally Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, where we can find the Two Towers, outstanding symbol of the city.

Santo Stefano. Also called “the seven churches”, has been a centre of religion ever since the 1st century when a pagan group founded here its temple dedicated to the Goddess Isis. Today it is an intricate maze of churches, chapels, courtyards and passageways. The surrounding beautiful renaissance square completes the fascinating setting.
